An employee in this class performs commercial driver's license examination work including the administration of a variety of tests to driver's license applicants, the determination of appropriate license category, the assurance of applicant qualifications, the collection and processing of various fees, and the issuance of licenses. This class differs from Driver's License Examiner in that an incumbent of the latter performs driver's license examination duties for non-commercial vehicles.
This classification performs responsibilities at a working level under general supervision of a Branch Manager.
- Train associate-level employees on all tasks and responsibilities of a Commercial Driver's License examiner, answering questions and providing clarification related to the position.
- Obtain all necessary information for customers applying for a commercial driver's license, a driver's license, permit, or other relevant documents, enter the information into the computer system, and meet the customer's needs in accordance with time and quality requirements.
- Perform necessary knowledge and road skills tests, focusing on commercial drivers licensing appointments and noncommercial drivers licensing customers. Administer vision screenings, written tests, and road skills tests to applicants applying for Tennessee driver's licenses in accordance with state of Tennessee and federal guidelines, photograph applicants with a digital camera, advise applicants of results, and record information in the computer database.
- Explain state laws, licensing requirements, and rules and regulations of the Department of Safety and Homeland Security regarding commercial driver's license and driver's license policies and procedures to the public, answering questions regarding office hours, location, fee amounts, and application process.
- Count and record register cash-on-hand at the beginning and end of work shifts, print daily receipt reports from registers, identify discrepancies between receipt report and cash on hand, calculate daily office revenue by aggregating all register revenues for the office, and reconcile the daily office revenue by comparing daily report to INFOPAC report.
- Inspect motor vehicle functioning, including lights, brakes, turn signals, to determine if the vehicle is safe to operate, and assess adherence to road safety rules, regulations, and laws by observing applicant's abilities to maneuver the vehicle and to follow traffic signs, lights, and right-of-way.
- Update operational records or licensing information and enter biographical data into the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST), compare applicants' personal information in the database with data on written application to ensure accuracy, and review applicant's information with the applicant to ensure all information is correct.
- Maintain at least 10 hours of commercial driver's license knowledge and road testing annually to stay in compliance with federal and state law.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proof of education (transcripts or diploma).
- Completion of a background clearance application including release of all records involving criminal history and completion of fingerprint‑based and name‑based criminal history records checks.
- No criminal convictions or findings of insanity in civilian or military jurisdiction of any disqualifying offense listed in 49 CFR §(a) or within the seven years preceding application for any interim disqualifying offenses listed in 49 CFR §(b).
- No release from incarceration within the five years preceding application for any interim disqualifying offenses listed in 49 CFR §(b).
- Not under warrant for a felony listed in 49 CFR §(a) or (b).
- Pass a pre‑employment physical examination following an offer of employment.
- Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or be able to obtain one prior to appointment.
- Maintain at least 10 hours of commercial driver's license knowledge and road testing annually.
- Valid driver's license.
- No record of driving under the influence, reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, or more than four moving violations for the past five years.
