Job Title
Garbage Collection Crew Member
Job DescriptionWorks under the supervision of assigned supervisor. Directs small work crew in the collection of garbage, trash, and recyclables. Participates in work being performed such as picking up garbage carts, debris, appliances and dumping into truck. Drives packer-type truck equipped with hydraulic lifting device to collect garbage and trash on designated routes. Transports load to disposal area and operates hydraulic lever to dump load.
Inspects and checks on daily basis truck equipment such as tires, brakes, and various fluids. Performs preventive maintenance such as greasing necessary parts and fueling truck and assigned equipment. Provides working directions to various crews performing solid waste functions. Responsible for the completion of assigned routes and reports unusual situations to management. Reports code violations dealing with collection of garbage, trash, and recyclables.
Communicates and reports status of routes to include start and completion time as well as tonnage.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing to receive instructions and give feedback. Requires traversing on uneven ground lifting and carrying garbage, debris, tree limbs, appliances, and garbage carts and dump into truck. Requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching (including above head), standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting 50 lbs. or up to 100 lbs.
with assistance. Requires the ability to climb in and out of cab of trucks. Requires the ability to operate assigned equipment such as a smart phone or other hand held communication devices. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS Majority of work is performed outdoors in sometimes adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to odors, noise, dust, pollen, fumes and traffic.
Ability to understand written and verbal instructions and have working experience as a crew person or truck driver. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver's License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. May be required to complete a battery of tests as deemed appropriate by Human Resources to evaluate competencies in operating related equipment.
