The Preschool Program Lead is responsible for coordinating along with leading a dynamic set of early childhood programs serving children aged 0–5 and their caregivers. This position currently is responsible for several established offerings such as STEM for Tots, & Me series, Preschool Playtime, Family Flips, and Little Sportsters as well as serving as a resource for sport-specific adult/child classes. The program currently reaches families through approximately 4–6 programs or events per month, with a focus on engagement, development, and positive early experiences.
ScheduleSchool Year: typically 12‑15 hours/week*, evening programming on Wednesdays, no weekends.
Summer: limited hours, 2‑3 hours/week.
* Hours may increase up to 18 hours/week as programs expand.
- Plan, schedule, prepare, implement, and evaluate early childhood recreation programs and activities for children ages 0–5 and, when designed, their caregivers.
- Develop age‑appropriate curriculum that promotes creativity, movement, school‑readiness skills, and social interaction. Monitor the participants and provide interaction and guidance to ensure positive experiences.
- Cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for young children and families.
- Build and maintain partnerships with schools, libraries, community groups, and early childhood organizations.
- Plan, prepare, gather, and implement the program supplies and materials for regular programming.
- Identify new program opportunities based on community needs and trends in early childhood education.
- Perform administrative tasks to support and improve the program.
- Ensure safety and security by inspecting and adjusting the programming area and equipment and recommending maintenance and repair as needed. Ensuring cleanliness of the program space and materials alongside the facility staff.
- Communicate effectively with program attendees (both children and adults), volunteers and staff, and leadership.
- Recruit, train and support volunteers, as needed. When required, prepare and support staff to sub.
- Provide on‑site leadership at select programs and assist with seasonal events as needed and as available.
- Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with individuals at various levels both within and outside the Department.
- Experience related to working with children and early education is preferred.
- Bilingual in Spanish/English is desirable.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, volunteers, other City employees and the public.
- Working knowledge of the department’s activity.
- Early childhood education is highly valued, but not required.
- Experience working with children required; preference for three years’ experience.
- First Aid/CPR certification (may be obtained after hire).
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use both hands to handle, touch, grasp; reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
- Specific vision abilities include close and distant vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to focus.
- Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
