Job Title: District Elementary Library Media Specialist [Grades K-4]
Reports To: Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
Schedule: 0.5 FTE

FLSA: Exempt (Professional)
Summary:The District Elementary Library Media Specialist is a key member of the instructional team, providing leadership and support for library services across the elementary schools within the district. They will coordinate the library work of a site staff member at each of the five elementary schools who (for a portion of their day) is assigned to library support. This position requires a strong understanding of early literacy, information literacy, and technology integration in education.
The Library Media Specialist will collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to foster a love of reading and learning in all students.
- Select, acquire, and organize a diverse and engaging collection of print and digital library materials, including books, audio books, ebooks, databases, and online resources.
- Manage the library budget effectively to ensure the collection is current, relevant, diverse, and inclusive of our students' identities.
- Develop and maintain a library cataloging system in Destiny Library Manager.
- Ensure the physical and digital library environments are safe, welcoming, and conducive to learning.
- Collaborate with onsite staff and volunteers to develop and implement effective systems for teacher and student access to the library collection. This will include facilitating training.
- Ensure the library collection aligns with the district's curriculum and meets the needs of all students.
- Collaborate with other librarians in the district on the collection development plan which includes selection, deselection, challenged materials procedures, and an intellectual and academic freedom statement.
- Facilitate reconsideration procedures, recognizing that these processes differ from those for textbooks and instructional materials.
- Stay current in the field through professional journals and other means.
- Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources and skills into classroom instruction.
- Develop and implement innovative library programs and activities that engage students in reading, learning, library literacy, and critical thinking.
- Collaborate with teachers to support classroom projects.
- Integrate technology effectively into library services, including the use of online resources, digital tools, and library management systems.
- Maintain and troubleshoot library technology equipment.
- Collaborate with community organizations to bring enriching library experiences to students.
- Advocate for the importance of school libraries and library services.
- This position serves all five district elementary schools.
- Regular travel between buildings is required. A rotating schedule will be developed collaboratively with school administrators and designated library staff to ensure equitable support and consistent services across all sites.
- Valid Minnesota School Library Media Specialist License.
- Demonstrated knowledge of elementary literacy instruction.
- Proven ability to plan, implement, and assess effective library programs.
- Knowledge of library management systems, including Destiny Library Manager or comparable software.
- Experience integrating technology into instruction.
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Strong technology skills, including proficiency in library management systems and online resources.
