Plumber, HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer
PLUMBING TECHNICIAN
Primary Function:
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation, the Plumbing Technician performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, inspection, diagnosis, and repair of plumbing systems and fixtures across all District facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Install, repair, and maintain water supply lines, sewer lines, drainage systems, gas lines, backflow prevention devices, drinking fountains, toilets, sinks, showers, water heaters, and other plumbing fixtures.
- Inspect plumbing systems for leaks, malfunctions, water pressure issues, or code violations; diagnose problems and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Clear clogged drains and sewer lines using power snakes, hydro‑jets, and other appropriate equipment.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on plumbing systems and equipment.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, technical manuals, and specifications.
- Ensure all plumbing work complies with state and local codes, safety regulations, and District standards.
- Estimate time, labor, and materials for assigned projects; maintain records of completed work.
- Respond to emergency plumbing situations during and outside of normal working hours as needed.
- Coordinate with contractors, inspectors, vendors, and other maintenance personnel.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and the assigned vehicle in clean and proper order.
- Provide input on plumbing‑related project planning and design during renovations or new construction.
- May train or provide guidance to apprentices or maintenance assistants.
- Participate in District in‑service training as required.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments across multiple facilities.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, confined spaces, sewage, water, chemicals, and noise.
- Daily workload and priority schedules.
- Professionals must be physically able to respond to possible emergency situations and may perform duties in some temperature extremes and hazardous conditions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Pushing, reaching, crouching, and operating plumbing tools and equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and crouch for extended periods.
- Visual acuity to inspect systems and read blueprints or schematics.
- Hearing and speaking to communicate and follow directions.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 75 pounds), bend, stoop, climb ladders, and work in awkward positions.
- Subject to emergency call‑back during off‑hours, weekends, or holidays.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to organize and coordinate tasks.
- Ability to think critically, solve problems, and multitask.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret printed matter and computer screens.
- Ability to create written communication so others can clearly understand written communications.
- Ability to understand speech.
QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in plumbing installation and repair.
- Applicable plumbing, building, and safety codes (e.g., UPC – Uniform Plumbing Code).
- Principles of water conservation and efficiency.
- Basic HVAC, electrical, and construction practices as they relate to plumbing.
- Reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
QUALIFICATIONS – ABILITY TO:
- Perform skilled plumbing work safely and efficiently.
- Use plumbing tools and equipment with expertise and care.
- Diagnose plumbing problems and determine appropriate repairs.
- Communicate effectively with coworkers, administrators, and supervisors.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Maintain accurate records and follow work orders and written instructions.

LICENSES AND
CERTIFICATIONS:
Must hold a valid California plumbing license or be able to obtain one within six months of hire; maintain a clean driving record.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE CLEARANCE required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a recognized plumbing apprenticeship program or equivalent training; minimum of three (3) years of experience, preferably in commercial or public facility settings.
