Position Overview

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Supply Chain Management Department seeks a Mid-Level Buyer to procure, administer, and support a range of acquisitions. Reporting to the Commodities Team Lead, the Buyer will provide support to activities involving the placement of purchase orders for such items as, but not limited to, personal computers and peripherals, plumbing supplies, fasteners/hardware, medical supplies, outside fabrication of electronic components, printed circuit boards, and metal components and assemblies.

The Buyer is also responsible for completing routine to complex higher value procurement functions for the acquisition of commodities, equipment, components, and services.

Your Specific Responsibilities Include
  • Responsible for performing high value procurement functions for the acquisition of commodities, equipment, components, and services.
  • Perform higher value transactions and services such as buying scientific or other specialized equipment and supplies.
  • Evaluate price, quality, availability, reliability, and technical support when choosing equipment and supplies.
  • Evaluate vendor quotes and services to determine the most desirable suppliers.
  • Perform market research to determine the most cost effective sources for materials and equipment.
  • Work for E-shop administration which includes verifying and coordinating with requestors regarding any changes; reviewing, validating, and reconciling invoices prior to submission to Accounts Payable for processing; monitoring and reconciling aging reports; closing purchase orders, and initiating and processing purchase order changes as needed in coordination with GSS Accounts Receivable teams and Sales Team
  • Advise and assist departments in the selection of supplies and equipment.
  • Document price analysis before making award for equipment and services.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.
To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience performing duties similar to those listed above or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience with an on-line purchase requisition and purchase order system.
  • Strong knowledge of market conditions, trade practices, sources, and lead times.
  • Experience placing routine but higher value purchase orders relative to best value and reasonableness of price costing.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment to identify, clarify and resolve routine but higher value problems (e.g. resolve discrepancies on RFPs and Purchase orders as they arise).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to take initiative to complete duties proactively, and work under varying deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
Preferred Requirements Include
  • Previous experience working in a research and development purchasing department.
  • Previous experience with Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR).
