Position: Division Leader for the LCLS Experimental Control Systems

Position Overview

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an internationally preeminent science facility operated by Stanford University at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory on behalf of the Department of Energy, Office of Science. It provides world‑leading scientific capabilities to a global user community, covering a broad research portfolio that includes advanced‐materials studies, clean‑energy catalysts, drug discovery, and extreme‑state physics.

Job Description

LCLS continually improves its X‑ray source, instrumentation, and associated technologies, engaging with users to meet scientific needs. We seek a Division Leader for the Experimental Control Systems Division who will sustain and enhance engineering activities, coordinate initiatives across LCLS, and manage resources, budget, and projects. The role reports directly to the LCLS Chief Engineer and is part of the LCLS Engineering leadership team.

Specific Responsibilities Include
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance to the Controls engineers and technical staff, including systems engineering and program management.
  • Ensure all divisional processes and policies align with SLAC and LCLS requirements, supporting rigorous design and delivery of precision equipment.
  • Maintain appropriate engineering staffing levels and morale, facilitating career development and training opportunities.
  • Oversee technical scope, schedule, cost, and quality assurance through design reviews and standardized engineering practices.
  • Support all operational activities related to LCLS through guidance and best practices.
  • Lead high‑level scientific, engineering, or technical research programs and initiatives.
  • Identify, clarify, and resolve complex issues with broad impact across the Directorate and the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with LCLS and Lab leaders on project decisions and advise senior management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
To Be Successful In This Position, You Will Bring
  • BS in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering or related field and at least ten years of engineering and leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in lifecycle management of complex control systems, preferably for large‑scale scientific facilities.
  • Extensive experience leading a large organization of technical staff through subordinate managers.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to influence and establish effective relationships in a diverse environment; motivate and mentor staff.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills for staff and senior management.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex issues quickly and make decisions that meet objectives in a collaborative, respectful, diverse culture.
In Addition, Preferred Requirements Include
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering or related field; ten years of relevant experience.
  • Formal training in systems engineering.
  • Experience with design, operation, and maintenance of XFEL systems.
  • Experience with in the DOE complex.
