Job Description Health and Safety Specialist
- Environment, Safety, and Health Division

We are seeking a highly motivated Health and Safety Specialist with extensive experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining a broad range of industrial hygiene and safety programs. In this position, you will be joining our Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Division. Members of this team support industrial hygiene and safety services, chemical /hazardous materials management, and waste management functions critical to SLAC’s scientific research and operational mission.

Specific Responsibilities Include
  • Manage several ES&H programs. This includes administering, assessing, and improving programs, and serving as a subject matter expert in support of operations at the Laboratory. Programs may include asbestos, beryllium, lead, silica, cryogens/cryogenic equipment, chemical exposure assessments, fume hoods, compressed/hazardous/toxic gases, noise/hearing conservation, non-ionizing radiation, respiratory protection, etc.
  • Support projects (project planning documentation and specifications) to ensure that they meet requirements; work with stakeholders to find the best solution to safety problems while enabling the team to meet the project schedule and budget.
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver safety training for programs that they manage. Examples include asbestos, lead, or other subjects of industrial hygiene.
  • Perform assessments, monitor workplace hazards, and develop appropriate hazard mitigations; support the investigation of incidents; provide technical advice and interpretation of regulations.
  • Effectively interface and collaborate with all levels of staff including technicians, principal investigators, and operational support teams.
  • Under limited supervision, perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with SLAC’s Environment, Safety and Health Program and governmental regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including but not limited to chemical, physical, biological, and radiological) that could be present in the work area; remediate hazards, and/or recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.
  • Recommend improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazard potential.
  • Provide technical advice and interpretation of various government regulations and SLAC policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations.
  • Manage the transfer of an existing asbestos database to a new platform.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.
To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years progressively responsible experience in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Practical knowledge of Cal/OSHA laws, regulations, and policies
  • Capable of identifying known potential exposures and recommending corrective action
  • Computer skills and familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite
  • Management, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control via technical reports.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely. Author professional reports to share results, provide guidance, and add to SLAC’s historic body of industrial hygiene sampling reports.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
  • Successfully interface and collaborate with all levels of staff including technicians, principal investigators, and operational support teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
A background in one or more of the following is strongly preferred
  • Industrial hygiene, asbestos program management, lead program management, IH sampling, familiarity with the ASTM E2356-18 Standard Practice for Comprehensive Building Asbestos Surveys.
  • Experience in an academic or laboratory research environment.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Holds or is actively working to obtain initial professional certifications, for example:
    • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
    • AHERA certifications (Asbestos)
    • CADPH Lead inspector/Assessor Project Monitor
