Soft Bank Group's Tax team is seeking a State & Local Tax (SALT) Associate to support the company's U.S. tax operations across a broad range of state and local tax compliance, reporting, and planning activities.
This role will play a key part in managing the Group's multi-state tax compliance obligations, including state income and franchise taxes, gross receipts taxes, property taxes, sales and use taxes, and other indirect tax matters. The position will work closely with internal finance, accounting, legal, and business teams, as well as external advisors, to ensure timely and accurate compliance while supporting the continued growth of Soft Bank Group's U.S. operations and investments.
The ideal candidate is a highly organized and detail-oriented tax professional with strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of multi-state tax rules, and a desire to leverage technology and automation to improve tax processes and reporting.
This position reports to the U.S. Tax Director, who oversees the company's U.S. tax planning and operations.
Key Responsibilities 1. State Income Tax Compliance & Reporting- Partner with external tax advisors to prepare, review, and file state and local income and franchise tax returns, including unitary and combined reporting filings, and support quarterly estimated tax payments, extensions, and annual compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with accounting, finance and other functional teams to collect, validate, and analyze data required for state tax compliance and reporting.
- Maintain state tax compliance trackers and tax compliance calendar for the group companies.
- Support responses to tax notices and other inquiries from state and local taxing authorities, including coordinating with external advisors and preparing supporting documentation.
- Partner with external tax advisors to prepare, review, and file sales and use tax, property tax, gross receipts tax, commercial activity tax, and other state and local non-income tax returns, while supporting applicable filing, payment, and reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with accounting, finance and other functional teams to work on taxability determinations, exemption certificate management, valuation reviews, assessment support, exemption claims, and related tax analyses.
- Analyze the state and local tax implications of new business initiatives, investments, legal entity restructurings, and strategic projects, including indirect tax considerations related to products, services, procurement, and operational activities, and collaborate with internal stakeholders and external advisors to identify compliant and tax-efficient solutions.
- Monitor developments in state and local tax laws, regulations and administrative guidance; assess their potential impact on Soft Bank Group.
- Support the evaluation and implementation of state and local tax planning initiatives, including tax credits, incentives, abatements, and other economic development programs related to new investments, business expansions, and strategic projects.
- Partner with internal tax team members and external advisors to research and analyze state and local tax considerations arising from transactions, legal entity restructurings, financing arrangements, and other group tax planning initiatives, and assist in preparing technical memoranda, presentations, and supporting documentation.
- 5+ years of experience in State & Local Tax (SALT), preferably with a Big Four accounting firm, national accounting firm, corporate tax department, or tax advisory practice.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field required.
- CPA license, CPA eligibility, Master of Taxation (MST), or progress toward a professional certification preferred.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. state and local tax concepts, including:
- State income and franchise taxes
- Combined and unitary reporting
- Apportionment methodologies
- Gross receipts and other non-income taxes
- Sales and use taxes
- Property taxes
- Nexus and state filing requirements
- Strong tax research and technical writing skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex tax concepts to both tax and non-tax stakeholders.
- Familiarity with state tax audits, notices, and controversy matters is a plus.
