O'Melveny has an immediate opening for a Managing Clerk in one of our California offices (Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Century City, Newport Beach).

The Managing Clerk collaborates with the Assistant Managing Attorneys, other Managing Clerks, and members of the Managing Attorney’s Office team to develop best practices for electronic filing and calendaring for the firm.

The salary range in CA for this role is $135,000 - $155,000 and represents the firm’s good faith minimum and maximum range for this role at the time of posting.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Reviews for accuracy, as to form and procedural compliance, all court documents served and/or filed, especially for California offices of the firm.
  • Provides procedural guidance and advice with respect to motion practice, policy and procedure in California State and Federal Courts.
  • Supervises Assistant Managing Clerks.
  • Assists with and handles electronic case filings via CM/ECF and California state court systems, in addition to hard copy filings and document retrieval.
  • Assists with making, and quality control of, docket and calendar entries.
  • Assists with issues relating to service of process including engaging process servers.
  • Assists with review of new cases and rule changes to ensure that lawyers are kept apprised of recent developments under California state rules, FRCP and FRAP.
  • Searches and extracts information from court-related databases, websites and relevant docketing and calendaring applications including, but not limited to, PACER, Bloomberg Law, Compu Law, Court Alert and Westlaw.
  • Screens and reviews incoming court documents and office correspondence in order to calculate and calendar relevant deadlines using the firm’s docketing system.
  • Ensures that lawyers are timely notified of filing deadlines and court appearances.
  • Assists with department projects as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • The position involves contact with lawyers, court and clerical staff. This requires solid interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized and a team player.
  • Must have familiarity with California federal and state court systems and the corresponding federal, state and court rules.
  • Able to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of personnel, including attorneys, co-workers, and administrators.
  • Must be flexible in order to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and able to work under tight deadlines.
  • Able to plan, organize and complete multiple related activities.
  • Must deliver high quality work product and have the ability to follow up and follow through.
  • Must possess the ability to work independently, as well as on a team, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a Managing Attorney/Clerk’s Office at a large law firm.
  • Experience supervising others preferred.
