Research Scientist, Physics, Research Assistant/Associate
Job Description
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Physical Science Research Professional to join the High Energy Density Science division. The division conducts research to determine the physical properties of matter in extreme conditions spanning high‑pressure material science, fusion plasmas, and laboratory astrophysics. The successful candidate will conduct experimental research in high energy density science, perform experiments using LCLS and high‑power lasers, develop laser‑driven particle sources, and study their interactions with matter.
In particular, the candidate will develop cryogenic high‑Z jet sources and determine their utility as a neutron source driven by ultrahigh‑intensity relativistic laser pulses.
- Develop new experimental techniques to characterize the interactions of high‑power optical lasers and X‑ray lasers with argon and other high‑Z cryogenic jet materials, with an emphasis on fielding at user facilities with high‑intensity lasers.
- Perform research and experimental work focused on optimizing laser‑jet interactions for neutron generation.
- Participate in experimental studies at light sources and high‑power laser facilities.
- Complete data analysis from laser and X‑ray experiments and generate summaries to track R&D progress.
The position is a 1‑year fixed term, with the possibility of extension or conversion to a regular‑continuing role contingent on project funding.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in physics, applied physics, or a related field and at least two years of research experience in plasma physics.
- In‑depth understanding of experimental measurement techniques.
- Knowledge of laboratory astrophysics and shock waves.
- Experience with energetic particle beams and/or X‑ray scattering analysis and characterization.
- Demonstrated record of scientific productivity through publications and presentations.
- Ability to carry out independent research.
- Strong analytical and computational skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Experience with and understanding of time‑resolved X‑ray and laser spectroscopy.
- Consistent with the law, the Laboratory will provide reasonable accommodation to employees with disabilities who require accommodation to perform the essential functions of the job.
