Position Overview

The internship will focus on estimating scaling of different algorithms/software used in Machine Learning and Scientific Applications. Interns will analyze multiple ML and AI software, including state‑of‑the‑art large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Llama, and assess scalability and complexity for applications such as time series, sensing, natural language processing with transformers, and convolutional neural networks. The analysis will provide a basis for a DOE effort developing a roadmap for energy‑efficient computing.

Responsibilities
  • Identify algorithms and software across CPUs, GPUs, ASICs, and new customizable architectures.
  • Develop metrics for measuring algorithmic scaling and complexity.
  • Determine data needs for each hardware configuration in consultation with the mentor.
  • Analyze data quality and validity.
  • Create models to estimate energy consumption for computational tasks.
  • Validate and refine models through verification and critical analysis.
  • Prepare reports and scientific publications under the mentor’s guidance.
Qualifications
  • Pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral degree in science, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Passionate about innovative solutions for science and engineering problems.
  • Experience with Python programming is beneficial.
  • Background in physics, electrical or computer engineering, or computer science.

Eligibility & Details

Position is an hourly, temporary, non‑benefits eligible internship. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an educational program, and have U.S. work authorization. The on‑site internship lasts eight weeks between May and mid‑August.

Pay

$31.02-$39.26 per hour.
