Microelectronics Architecture/Hardware Energy Efficiency Internship
The summer internship will involve estimating energy used in computing across hardware systems, based on published data and research findings. Interns should have a background in physics, electrical or computer engineering, or computer science. This is part of a new DOE initiative on Energy Efficient Computing, offering opportunities at SLAC National Laboratory and Stanford University for graduate students.
Specific Responsibilities- Identify the different architectures and hardware, including those used in machine learning and scientific computing.
- Identify the instruction sets relevant to each architecture.
- Outline the nature and quantity of data required for each hardware platform, in discussion with the mentor.
- Conduct data analysis to ascertain data quality and veracity, in partnership with the mentor.
- Develop models for estimating energy efficiencies for the problems in collaboration with the mentor.
- Carry out verification, validation, and critical analysis of the estimates.
- Refine and develop models to incorporate scientific knowledge into the model formulation and training phases.
- Prepare reports and scientific publications outlining the advances under the guidance of the mentor.

- Experience a multidisciplinary research environment, integrating knowledge from computer engineering, physical sciences, applied mathematics, and software applications.
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a Master’s or Doctoral degree in a science or engineering discipline.

- Prior experience with Python programming is beneficial.

The expected pay range for this position is $31.02 - $39.26 per hour.
EligibilityEligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization. The on‑site internship lasts eight weeks, between May and mid‑August, based on candidate availability.
Employment Details- Temporary, hourly, non‑benefits eligible.
- Full‑time equivalent of 50% or more, not to exceed 980 hours over six consecutive months.
- Employment duration: 12 weeks.
