Driver​/Mechanic

Johnson’s Nursery is seeking a skilled Driver/Mechanic to play an important role in the safety and transportation of our product and equipment around the Midwest. This hybrid role also participates in the repair and maintenance of our fleet of vehicles and equipment.

• This position can share time on the road and between our various locations in Jackson or Menomonee Falls, WI.
• Ability to work 8-14 hours a day.
• Ability to start early some days and stay late on others.
  • Spring through the first week in July: Monday-Saturday, 10-14 hours a day.
  • Second week of July through late fall: Monday-Friday, 8-12 hours a day.
  • Late fall through spring: Monday-Friday, 8 hours a day (typically 7:00am – 3:30pm).
• Has or can easily obtain Class A tier 1 CDL (company-paid training to the right candidate).
  • Has worked on or been around class 8 trucks so they have the general knowledge needed to quickly obtain a CDL.
• Fluent with manual transmissions 13 and 18 speeds.
• General knowledge and ability to use or learn to use an ELD.
• Complete daily safety inspections on any truck you operate.

Plus, but not required:

• 2+ years Class A CDL experience.

• Greasing.
• Identifying problems or possible future problems.
• Take direction from the Supervisor and complete general mechanical projects within a reasonable time.
• Assist in higher-level mechanical repairs and work directly with the Head Mechanic.

Pluses, but not required:

• Ability to weld or fabricate:
  • Mig.
  • Plasma torch.
  • Metal cutting.
  • Measuring.
• 2+ years’ experience in an industrial mechanic environment.

• Willing to learn and grow within our full-service shop.
• Insurable driver’s license (through our provider).
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and ability to pass random drug tests through the years as required by the FMCSA.
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs.
• Willing to assist in live loading and unloading.
• Work outside in any weather condition.
• Good positive attitude and communication skills.
• A good, solid set of problem-solving skills.
• Ability to use the skills you will learn from coworkers to help guide and assist unfamiliar customers on deliveries to make the unloading process as smooth as possible.
• Flexible and open to an ever-changing work environment and daily responsibilities. Every day has its similarities but, never the same as the last.
