Job TypeFull‑time, 0.30 FTE (12.00 hour shifts). Shift: 4.
Job SummaryThe Nurse Extern is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for an identified group of patients in an assigned patient care area under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Other duties as assigned.
Experience DescriptionIf in a 4‑year program, a minimum of two acute‑care medical‑surgical clinical rotations (or one medical‑surgical rotation and one relevant clinical rotation) from an accredited nursing school is required. If in a 2‑year program or accelerated/direct entry, a minimum of one medical‑surgical clinical rotation with relevant experience is required. At least one rotation must have included medication administration. Nursing courses/clinicals must have provided theory, knowledge, and experience in providing patient care, performing patient‑care procedures and techniques, performing physical assessments, gathering of history data, developing nursing care plans, and documenting in the medical record.
Experience of six months or more as a nursing assistant is preferred.
Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing school is required, or a graduate ready to take the NCLEX or preparing to retake the NCLEX for a second time.
Special Skills DescriptionAbility to read, write, understand, perform simple arithmetic, and follow directions related to basic patient care. Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, visitors, and physicians courteously. Ability to complete simple comparisons between numbers. Ability to demonstrate experience in 60% of essential functions. Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail for 80% of work time when performing basic patient‑care tasks.
Ability to walk and stand for up to 80% of work time and lift and position patients for up to 20% of work time.
State of Wisconsin Nursing Assistant Certification is preferred. Otherwise, provide documentation from an accredited school for professional nurses indicating successful completion of the basic nursing course that meets the criteria noted by the State of Wisconsin administrative code. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA‑approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire.
