Pember Companies, Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Accountant / Payroll Specialist to support the financial operations of our growing excavation and concrete construction company. This position is responsible for processing weekly payroll, maintaining accurate accounting records, supporting job cost reporting, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, union, and company requirements.
The ideal candidate has experience in construction accounting, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and enjoys working closely with operations, project managers, human resources, and field employees.
Essential Responsibilities Payroll Administration- Process weekly payroll for hourly, salaried, and seasonal employees.
- Review employee timecards for accuracy and job cost coding.
- Process overtime, prevailing wage, per diem, reimbursements, and deductions.
- Maintain employee payroll records and direct deposit information.
- Process garnishments, child support orders, and tax levies.
- Prepare payroll tax filings and quarterly payroll reports.
- Reconcile payroll liabilities and benefits deductions.
- Coordinate year-end W-2 preparation.
- Respond to employee payroll questions.
- Prepare journal entries and monthly account reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close.
- Process accounts payable and vendor payments.
- Prepare customer invoices and assist with accounts receivable collections.
- Maintain fixed asset records.
- Reconcile bank accounts and credit card statements.
- Assist with budgeting and financial reporting.
- Support external auditors and CPA firm.
- Allocate payroll costs to appropriate jobs and cost codes.
- Review labor reports for accuracy.
- Assist project managers with labor cost reporting.
- Support job costing and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting.
- Assist with certified payroll reporting on public works projects.
- Monitor equipment usage allocations and labor burden.
- Maintain payroll compliance with federal, Wisconsin, and local regulations.
- Assist Human Resources with employee onboarding and offboarding documentation.
- Support annual workers' compensation audits.
- Maintain confidentiality of employee and financial information.
- Recommend improvements to accounting and payroll processes.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of accounting or payroll experience.
- Knowledge of payroll tax regulations.
- Excellent organizational skills.
