Job Overview

The School of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin‑Stout seeks a tenure‑track faculty member in Ceramics and Foundations. The position is a 9‑month, full‑time academic role that includes teaching, research, and service to the university. The successful candidate will develop a creative practice in ceramics, lead a studio, and contribute to undergraduate and graduate courses in ceramics and art foundations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach introductory through advanced level ceramics courses.
  • Teach foundation courses (2D Design, 3D Design, or Drawing) when qualified.
  • Maintain and manage the ceramics studio, including safety inspections, kiln operations, glaze and clay mixing, and supply ordering.
  • Supervise student workers and mentors the student Ceramics Guild.
  • Conduct student academic advisement and assessment of student learning, contributing to program assessment and accreditation efforts.
  • Maintain an active studio artist practice and engage in creative research.
  • Participate in departmental, school, and university committees and foster an inclusive learning environment.
  • Provide support to maintain a healthy and safe classroom environment and perform additional duties as assigned by the Chair.
Qualifications

Minimum / Required:

  • Completed MFA in Ceramics.
  • Evidence of potential for teaching excellence.
  • Experience teaching ceramics at the college level, including creation and glazing.
  • Experience teaching one or more art foundation classes at the college level.
  • Studio management experience (glaze and clay mixing, kiln operations).
  • Expertise in at least two of the following: wheel‑thrown pottery, sculptural hand building, mold making/slip casting techniques.

Highly Desired / Preferred:

  • Active creative practice with exhibitions, presentations, or other professional research activities.
  • Ability to utilize new and emerging digital technologies.

The School of Art & Design has more than 85 faculty and staff and serves over 1,300 students, offering MFA degrees, ten undergraduate degrees, and seven minors.
