Field Service Technician – Network Specialist

This position has overall responsibility for maintaining a highly reliable network of systems including the central office switch, carrier and transmission equipment, fiber electronics, business communication systems, and other auxiliary equipment. Responsibilities include installation and maintenance of network infrastructure and circuits, digital switch devices and cross‑connects, and participation on project teams. The technician also installs, maintains, and repairs telecommunications products sold and leased by TDS such as Key Systems, PBX, Centrex, and other business systems.

Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, the individual selected for this position will be required to reside within a 60‑minute distance from the Eau Claire, Wisconsin warehouse located at: 2627 Truax Blvd - Eau Claire, WI 54703.

This position is eligible for a $2,000 sign‑on bonus!

Responsibilities
  • Installs, troubleshoots, tests, splices, repairs, and maintains telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and/or other TDS products for new and existing customers. Installs, configures, maintains, and repairs PBX, Key Systems, Centrex Systems, business systems, fiber terminals, POTS, ISDN, DSL, T‑1s, and/or DS3s, identifying & repairing defective cable with test equipment, locating cable and fiber, performing pole climbing and operating construction equipment.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, and maintains central office equipment including switch, operating software, and other auxiliary equipment; maintains backups, updates manuals, and provides functional support.
  • Provides advanced troubleshooting support and responds to “trouble” dispatches.
  • Provides high‑level support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements).
  • Provides excellent customer service, proactively educating and selling TDS products and services.
  • Performs project management for system installation and related functions as requested.
Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 1+ year of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs.
Other Qualifications
  • Successfully complete customer‑specific requirements (background check, safety course).
  • Availability for on‑call/standby duties, occasional travel, and overtime.
  • Ability to maintain DOT requirements for vehicles >10,000 lbs.
  • Strong understanding of telecommunication products and services, including structured wiring, video/CATV, data networks, etc.
  • Proficiency with computer applications: databases, dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Office.
  • Independent decision making with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated customer service, sales, and communication skills.
  • Organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
  • Physical ability to operate heavy construction equipment and lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Willingness to work various/swing shifts, overtime, and manual transmission vehicles.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Regularly required to sit, stand, write, operate a computer keyboard, and communicate with customers. Frequently required to move, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, or climb. Frequently lift 50 lbs and occasionally 100 lbs. Vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, focus. May work outdoors, in mechanical rooms, and under extreme weather conditions. Exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
