Spang Power Electronics, a division of Spang & Company, offers an exciting career opportunity as an Embedded Controls Engineer based in Mentor, OH.
This role focuses on designing, implementing, and validating embedded control software for industrial digital power electronics systems. You will develop firmware for real‑time control, signal acquisition, digital filtering, and firmware development tightly coupled to high‑power hardware. The position requires collaboration with hardware engineers and hands‑on work with real systems in the lab.
Responsibilities include developing and maintaining embedded firmware for digital control of industrial power electronics, including systems using SCRs and IGBTs to generate regulated DC and AC output power. You will architect and implement firmware for real‑time control on MCUs, DSPs, or FPGAs using C/C++ or similar low‑level languages, and apply control algorithms for voltage, current, power, and thermal regulation. Additional duties include implementing firmware‑level protection, monitoring, and diagnostic features to support industrial power reliability, participating in technical reviews, contributing to documentation, coding standards, and version control practices, and supporting product validation, manufacturing transitions, and field troubleshooting.
Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, or Controls Engineering or a related field and 3+ years of experience in embedded controls, embedded software, or real‑time systems. You must have strong skills in C/C++, RTOS environments, and digital control of industrial power converters, as well as experience with microcontrollers or DSPs and hardware such as ADCs, PWMs, timers, and interrupts.
Understanding power electronics and control theory and the ability to use standard lab tools are required. Experience with embedded web servers and web interface development is a plus.
The position requires occasional travel up to 10% and is based in Mentor, OH. Spang offers a full benefits package, including a competitive 401(k) matching plan, competitive salaries, and more. Equal Opportunity Employer / Protected Veterans / Individuals with Disabilities.
