POSITION SUMMARY
The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) supports veterinarians in managing shelter population health and delivering accessible preventative care to the community. This position operates in a fast-paced environment supporting high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) surgical flows, public wellness appointments, and medical triage.
QUALIFICATIONS- Minimum of 1 year of experience in an animal hospital is highly desirable.
- Current registration in the State of Ohio as a Registered Veterinary Technician at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
- Ability to assist veterinarians with soft-tissue surgery as directed.
- Prepare animals for surgery; induce and monitor anesthesia.
- Medicate and provide routine medical care and clinical laboratory tests to shelter animals, including blood draws, cytology, and urinalysis.
- Render emergency treatment in life-threatening situations to sustain life.
- Performs follow-up treatment as prescribed by a veterinarian.
- Performs dental prophylaxis under veterinary supervision.
- Calculates drug dosages and fills prescriptions.
- Maintains drug logs in accordance with state and federal standards.
- Must become euthanasia certified within 1 year of employment.
- Must be able to maintain organization in a fast-paced environment.
- Committed to maintaining the integrity of the organization’s events while professionally representing Lake Humane Society.
- Must maintain an inclusive mindset when working with members of the public.
- Educate the public on preventative health and post-operative care to support pet retention.
- Commitment to de-escalation of tense situations and an empathy for the emotions of clients.
- Ability to utilize Microsoft Word, email platforms, and Excel. Animal database experience preferred.
- Assist with patient check-in, patient flow, client follow-up, and check-out as needed.
- Provide training and support to the shelter staff, volunteers, adopters, and clients regarding shelter medicine, disease control, and animal care.
- Other duties as assigned by the Medical Director.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTSPosition requires 40 hours per week. Flexibility is required, and the Registered Veterinary Technician may need to work nights and weekends for events, trainings, and other special circumstances as directed by the Medical Director and/or Executive Director.
WORK ENVIRONMENTPerforms work in both a shelter and office-like setting. Exposure to animals, animal waste, bites, scratches, fumes from cleaning/disinfectant solutions, airborne particles, zoonotic diseases, and moderate to high noise levels when in animal areas.
