Inside Wireman
By far, inside wireman is the largest of the four electrical works specialties. Nationally, the Inside Wireman position has over 200,000 Journeymen and Apprentices who are members of the IBEW. Just as important, though fewer in number, are the Outside Linemen, Residential Wireman, and Telecommunications Installer-Technicians.
Inside Wireman install conduit, electrical wiring, fixtures, and electrical apparatus inside commercial buildings and in a multitude of industrial settings. Major duties for the inside wireman include:
- Planning and Initiating Projects
- Establishing Temporary Power during Construction
- Establishing Grounding Systems
- Installing Service to Buildings and Other Structures
- Establishing Power Distribution within a Project
- Planning and Installing Raceway Systems
- Installing New Wiring and Repairing Old Wiring
- Providing Power and Controls to Motors, HVAC, and Other Equipment
- Installing Receptacles, Lighting Systems, and Fixtures
- Troubleshooting and Repairing Electrical Systems
- Installing and Repairing Indoor/Outdoor Electrical Systems and Power Feeders
- Installing Fire Alarm Systems
Over the course of the Inside Wireman apprenticeship program, apprentices must acquire a wealth of technical knowledge. A recent job analysis identified 83 specific knowledge areas that are important for successful job performance. A few of the most important ones are knowledge and skill of:
- The National Electrical Code
- How to Work with Energized Circuits
- Blueprints (Including Symbols Used)
- Electrical Schematic Diagrams
- State and Local Electrical Codes
- First Aid
- Hazardous Materials
- Specific Job Safety Rules
- Skill at Performing CPR
- Skill at Reading a Wire Table and Determine Proper Conductor Sizes
- Skill at Terminating Aluminum or Copper Cable
- Skill at Rigging Equipment
- Skill at Tying Knots
The Ability to:

Position Requirements
High School
To meet minimum qualifications for apprenticeship, applicants must:
- Pay the $30.00 application fee and complete an application form.
- Be a minimum of 17 years of age at the time of application. (18 years of age at the time of indenture.)
- Be at least a high school graduate, have a GED or have a two-year associate degree or higher.
- Show evidence of successful completion of one full year of high school algebra with a passing grade or one post high school Algebra course with a passing grade.
- Provide a transcript for high school and post high school education and training. GED records must be submitted if applicable. Via email or mail.
- Obtain a qualifying score of “5” or higher, using the electrical trade's aptitude test developed and validated by the American Institutes for Research.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- There is a physical requirement of climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, and lifts of various heights. Push, pull, crawl, crouch, and work in confined spaces such as attics, manholes, and crawlspaces, lift 25-to-50-pound objects on a consistent schedule, and use various hand and power assisted tools to install fixtures devices and electrical apparatus within commercial and industrial buildings.
- Submit a DD-214 to verify military training and/or experience if they are a veteran and wish to receive consideration for such training/experience.
- Prior to being indentured, applicants selected from the pool of interviewed applicants will be required to complete an online OSHA 10 Construction course and pass a drug screening as decided by the JATC.
- Individuals who can verify (by providing undisputable documenting evidence) that they have worked a minimum of four thousand (4000) hours specifically in the electrical construction trade, do not need to meet the requirements of items (c), (d), (e) and (f).
