Under department supervision, the Greenhouse Education Assistant assists in the instructional process by providing professional services for the classroom and District Academic Support Centers. This position provides an infrastructure and/or tutors for individualized or group related tutoring to students who use the academic support services. Work is generally diversified based on individual needs of the instructor and student. Judgment and analysis are required in making decisions within established procedures.

Daily responsibilities are completed independently using established policies and general objectives with occasional supervisory contact for policy clarification or interpretation.

Responsibilities include:

• Encouraging learning and study skill behaviors that help students to accomplish their academic goals.
• Diagnosing learning behaviors, developing strategies and anticipating learning outcomes to help students accomplish their academic goals; determining and scheduling appropriate support and or tutoring methods for students.
• Providing tutoring assistance for specific academic skills and subjects, consistent with classroom instruction and in conjunction with faculty instruction if needed.
• Coordinating and administering makeup test proctoring services for MATC students.
• Assuming responsibility for the maintenance of center and other spaces assigned; establishing and enforcing regulations related to center and the equipment used; managing inventory of supplies and equipment; creating purchase orders for needed equipment and supplies.
• Assisting students by providing problem resolution with computers; class issues; software applications including Blackboard, Microsoft Office Suite programs; class schedules; financial aid applications; homework that uses web-based platforms; computer support equipment; and audio/visual systems.
• Updating inventory and other data; preparing relevant reports, study guides and reference materials.
• Assisting with district-wide recruitment, interviewing, application, hiring, and training of tutors.
• Assisting with developing and maintaining files, databases, and progress records; preparing reports as required or assigned.
• Acting as a liaison between students and faculty.
• Providing general information about MATC including relevant wrap around services and resources; referring students to other departments or services to meet their educational needs.
• Participating in related in-service training, workshops, divisional meetings, and other educational activities as required.
• Assist with preparation of materials for greenhouse laboratory.
• Preparing exhibits and demonstrations in the greenhouse for various class or lab presentation.
• Maintaining plant material as required in greenhouses through planting, transplanting, watering, treatment and monitoring and adjusting of greenhouse settings.
• Performing minor repairs and service work on greenhouse infrastructure and greenhouse equipment; notifying service repair personnel of malfunctions and problems and facilitating sending larger repairs out for service.
• Assembling and disassembling greenhouse systems such as: mist systems, irrigation lines, and water capture systems.
• Maintaining greenhouse environmental control parameters through Wadsworth system.
• Providing support for greenhouse operations in collaboration with support staff and faculty.
• Performing other related duties as required for the efficient operations of the division.
