Salary: $65.60 - $84.79 per hour

General Description

This is a part‑time instructional assignment in the Noncredit Department at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Adult Education and Noncredit. The professor could be assigned to teach a variety of English courses. The maximum teaching load is 10 units per semester, which may include evening and weekend hours.

Essential Functions
  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations.
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policy.
  • Maintain required student attendance and scholastic records.
  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations.
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy.
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum.
  • Participate in the development of teaching‑learning methods and materials.
  • Participate in departmental, area and campus professional activities/committees.
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program.
  • Perform tasks needed for student records, e.g., submit grades on time to admissions and records.
Typical Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual bicultural studies, reading, or speech AND a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment.
  • A Bachelor’s degree with any of the majors specified above AND one year of experience teaching ESL in an accredited institution AND a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment.
  • Possession of a full‑time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in ESL.
  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti‑racist principles to nurture a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning environment.
Preferred
  • Teaching experience in the field.
  • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments.
