Position Overview

Position title: Learning Assistant/Remedial Tutor/Tutor in the School of Engineering (Spark)

Salary range: $28.52 per hour (see Table 20 for the salary range)

Anticipated start: Academic Year:
July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027
Fall Semester: August 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026
Spring Semester: January 1, 2027 – May 31, 2027

Position duration: Academic Year 2026‑2027

The School of Engineering will hire instructional learning assistants, remedial tutors, and tutors for the following courses in Academic Year 2026‑2027:

• SPARK 010 – Cornerstone Engineering Design (formerly Inclusive Innovation)
• ENGR 096 – Human Centered Research and Design Engineering
• Other courses as needed (see the catalog for course descriptions)

A Learning Assistant works with groups of students during class time, facilitating discussion and promoting interaction.

Responsibilities include:

• Managing in‑class discussions by asking questions to help students learn materials.
• Attending weekly meetings with the course instructor and teaching assistants to prepare for sessions.
• Participating in trainings and a teaching seminar course required for newly hired Learning Assistants.
• Representing the University of California Remedial Tutors/Tutors, which are affiliated with UAW‑AFL‑CIO.

Applicants are expected to have successfully completed, with a grade of “B” or higher, the course or a related course they wish to assist with and to be in good standing at the university with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

• Desire to enhance instruction in engineering classes.
• Interest in integration of technology‑mediated learning tools in engineering.
• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at UC Merced.
• Grade of “B” or higher in the target course or a related course.
• Good standing at the university with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Awareness and sensitivity to individual learning styles and student needs.
• Ability to apply study strategies, organizational skills, and time management in sessions.

• Experience with tutoring or mentoring.
