The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.

Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $28.78/hr - $34.80/hr.

About the Job

Under the general supervision of the Personnel Director, the Academic Personnel Specialist will support the daily operations of the School of Natural Sciences' Personnel Unit. This position, in coordination with the Personnel Unit team, provides analysis, research, and project management and supports the day-to-day functions of academic recruitments, advancement processes, and all other actions pertaining to Personnel. The incumbent will respond to inquiries and exercise independent judgment relative to the resolution of complex customer issues.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assembles, reviews, and processes materials for academic review and appointment cases. Provides support to faculty committees and/or chairs. Enters and retrieves data using various Human Resources Information Systems.
  • Provides staff support to faculty search committees, chairs, Faculty Equity Advisors, and the Dean on job postings, recruiting, and hiring policies and procedures.
  • Counsels faculty and other academic appointments concerning work-related problems, work-eligibility (visa) matters such as J-1 processing, H-1B processing, Permanent Residence applications, and benefits considerations.
  • Has primary responsibility for non-student and temporary academic appointments, including assisting with processing all hiring and separation documents for academic hires such as Unit-18 Faculty, Postdoctoral Scholars, Visiting Scholars, and other academic appointments.
  • Advises and counsels by analyzing and interpreting system-wide and organizational policies such as the APM & MAPP, making recommendations, and developing new or revised academic personnel procedures and practices for the School of Natural Sciences. Assists with administering policies and programs in academic reviews, recruiting, instructional labor relations, wage and salary administration, onboarding, offboarding, and training. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Business Administration, Human Resources, Business Law, Management, or other related areas, and/or equivalent experience/training.

AND

  • One year of directly related experience in a human resources discipline, or academic personnel, or a combination of education and experience as outlined.
  • PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP (Preferred)
