Overview

At Merced College, Helpdesk Technicians play a critical role in supporting student success and staff productivity through responsive, high‑quality technical support. You will serve as the first point of contact for technology assistance via phone, email, and in‑person interactions, providing first‑level support and collaborating with ITS team members to resolve more complex issues. Core

Responsibilities
  • Monitor, acknowledge, and document Help Desk related phone calls, emails, and user‑generated requests to ensure technical issues are identified and routed appropriately.
  • Communicate with ITS support staff regarding technical issues or requests and provide necessary information.
  • Assist in utilizing and maintaining the Help Desk database and perform data entry into various electronic documents.
  • Provide minor troubleshooting of hardware and network related issues and assist with basic software installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Attend and participate in district‑wide departmental meetings and committees to discuss technology‑related issues and convey information.
  • Advise users on the effective use of software to meet their department needs.
  • Assist with training documentation and track maintenance of technical libraries.
  • Continuously develop knowledge and technical skills to keep up with technology.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Computer and network terminology.
  • Operational characteristics of computer equipment, peripheral equipment, operating systems, and software applications (word processors, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, web and educational applications).
  • Methods and techniques for installing and troubleshooting software applications in a network environment.
  • Clear and concise communication, both oral and written.
  • Analytical and research skills for solving practical problems.
  • Support and respond to user requests regarding computer equipment, software, and resource scheduling.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.
  • Use of computers and peripheral equipment, diagnosis of technical issues, querying databases, and utilizing web resources.
  • Promotion of culturally affirming DEIA and anti‑racist principles to nurture an inclusive and equitable environment.
Required

Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree, or
  • High School diploma or GED plus three (3) years of applicable experience, or
  • Equivalent education and experience.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Physical Demand and Working Environment
  • Work primarily in an office environment with some travel; may require extended hours, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to work at a desk, in meetings, and to lift moderate to heavy weights as needed.
  • Ability to read printed matter and computer screens, stand or sit for prolonged periods, and reach in all directions.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
