General DescriptionUnder general supervision, the Automotive Mechanic performs journeyman-level work in the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, and electric automotive equipment. The role also supports scheduling for instructional and conference travel, field trips, and special events.
Essential Functions- Performs complex mechanical work on gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles, trucks, and forklifts.
- Decides the extent and type of repair needed for each piece of equipment.
- Overhauls engines, transmissions, brake systems, differentials, air conditioning systems, and carburetors.
- Tunes engines and orders parts and accessories.
- Maintains shop tools and equipment, records repairs, and certifies vehicles per California Highway Patrol regulations.
- Assists in assigning work and supervising student assistants.
- Completes other related duties as assigned.
- Tools, materials, and equipment used in automotive maintenance.
- Preventative maintenance principles for automotive equipment.
- Safe driving procedures.
- Inspect, locate, and diagnose mechanical defects.
- Estimate repair costs and order supplies.
- Operate required tools and equipment.
- Maintain accurate records and follow directions.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of community college students.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree and at least one (1) year of applicable experience.
- OR high school diploma or GED and four (4) years of applicable experience.
- OR high school diploma and three (3) years of experience plus applicable certifications.
- OR equivalent education and experience.
- Valid California driver’s license.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with exposure to fumes, dust, and odors. The position may require travel and extended hours including evenings and weekends.

- Hear and understand speech at normal levels.
- Communicate for clear understanding.
- Read printed matter and computer screens.
- Stand or sit for prolonged periods.
- Bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crawl, push, pull.
- Lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
- Reach in all directions.
- Work at heights and on ladders.
- Work in extreme temperatures.
