System Design Engineer

Location:

Remote

Duration: 12 months

Compensation: $67–$110 per hour.

Summary

The System Design Engineer will support the design and development of a sodium cover gas system and related plant systems. This position focuses on system design, engineering analysis, supplier oversight, and cross‑functional coordination throughout the design lifecycle, from requirements development through commissioning.

This role is ideal for an experienced engineer with deep expertise in mechanical systems, piping design, and fluid systems. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and external suppliers to develop safety‑related equipment and ensure compliance with applicable industry codes, standards, and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design fluid and mechanical systems from requirements development through final design and commissioning.
  • Perform engineering evaluations, trade studies, and technical analyses to support system design decisions.
  • Oversee suppliers responsible for the development, fabrication, and testing of gas processing, filtration, monitoring, and related equipment.
  • Review component designs and evaluate impacts on overall system performance and integration.
  • Develop and maintain system‑level engineering documentation, including technical specifications, design descriptions, and operating narratives.
  • Identify and resolve system integration issues through design reviews and cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Support design reviews and technical evaluations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop and review engineering deliverables including System Design Descriptions, Interface Control Documents, Engineering Design Specifications, calculations, reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Coordinate with design teams to develop and manage drawing packages, including P&IDs, system interface drawings, and 3D models.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, instrumentation and controls, civil, and nuclear engineering teams to establish system requirements and performance criteria.
  • Support development, qualification, and testing programs for new system designs.
  • Apply engineering codes and standards including ASME BPVC, API standards, and B31.3 requirements.
Qualifications
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university.
  • 10+ years of direct engineering experience with demonstrated mechanical systems expertise.
  • Experience with piping systems and the ability to read and develop P&IDs.
  • Experience working with suppliers on the development and fabrication of safety‑related equipment.
  • Strong understanding of applicable design codes and standards, including ASME, BPVC, and API.
  • Familiarity with safety classifications for systems, structures, and components (SSCs).
  • Experience with piping design and analysis.
  • Experience working under quality assurance standards such as ASME NQA‑1, AS9100, ISO 9001, or equivalent.
  • Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a complex engineering environment.
Nice to Have
  • Nuclear industry experience.
  • Experience supporting safety‑related or quality‑class equipment design.
  • Familiarity with advanced reactor, power generation, or highly regulated engineering environments.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering efforts.
  • Experience supporting equipment testing, qualification, and commissioning activities.
