Position Highlights

About Us

The DESPP delivers public safety, training, regulatory guidance, and scientific services using enforcement, prevention, education, and technology. DESPP emphasizes Operational Efficiency, data-informed decision making, ethical stewardship of resources, and continuous improvement. The Division of Scientific Services provides forensic support to local, state, and federal law enforcement and is organized into three primary analytical sections plus two non-analytical sections.

  • Chemical Analysis Section – toxicology, controlled substances, general chemistry
  • Forensic Biology/DNA Section – analysis of biological evidence and DNA profiling
  • Identification Section – firearms/toolmarks, latent prints, digital/computer crimes analysis
  • Quality Section – laboratory accreditation and quality assurance
  • Laboratory Support Services – administration, evidence receiving, case management

Examples of Duties

The Forensic Science Examiner 1 will receive training in Forensic Biology techniques. Training may include:

  • Examination of submitted evidence and documentation
  • Serological screening and confirmatory analysis of body fluids
  • Collect evidentiary samples for DNA analysis
  • Conduct DNA testing of evidentiary samples
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and provide explanations and interpretations of results
  • Testify in court as an expert witness
  • Perform related duties as required
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of modern crime scene processing and evidence identification; techniques for analyzing evidentiary materials; laboratory instrumentation for firearms, latent prints, documents, etc.
  • Skills in oral and written communication; interpersonal skills
  • Ability to conduct laboratory analysis; use computer software; act as an expert witness in court
Minimum Qualifications

General

Experience:

Six (6) years of experience in forensic analysis of evidentiary material.

Substitutions Allowed: College training in forensic science or related field may substitute for up to four years of General Experience (15 semester hours = 1/2 year). A Master’s degree may substitute for one additional year. A Ph.D. may substitute for General Experience. Connecticut Careers Trainee program may be substituted for General Experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with aseptic handling of forensic evidence
  • Experience with forensic serological testing or evidence screening
  • Experience with DNA techniques including extraction, quantitation, amplification, or capillary electrophoresis
  • Experience with forensic report writing
  • Experience with courtroom testimony related to forensic testing
Special Requirements
  • Flexible hours may be required
  • Travel may be required
Character Requirements

Strong background checks may be conducted prior to permanent appointment.

Working Conditions

Exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances may occur.
