Position Overview
Qualified Craft Worker (HVACR) (40 Hour) based at the Facilities Maintenance building in Meriden, CT. Responsible for preventive maintenance, repairs, and installations of HVACR systems across DESPP facilities statewide. On‑site position. Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
Responsibilities- Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and installations of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) systems.
- Support HVACR needs at DESPP troops, DESPP buildings, and as needed at DESPP radio towers statewide.
- Operate, maintain, and repair HVACR equipment and systems, including those using Freon or chilled water.
- Determine required cooling capacity, use psychometric charts, control and measure air flow, room air changes, and room pressurization.
- Monitor computerized control systems, perform tests for fuel gravity and gas leaks, add water‑treatment chemicals to boilers.
- Make estimates of time, personnel, and materials; keep shop and service records.
- Perform or facilitate inspections, repairs of steam traps, remove pipe insulation using OSHA‑approved methods.
- Operate heavy equipment, respond to emergencies at state‑owned airports if required.
- Act as liaison with other operating units and external contacts as needed.
- Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods and HVACR trade practices.
- Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to prepare estimates, keep shop records, and utilize computer software.
- Physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity.
- Four (4) years of experience in HVACR trade tasks.
- Two (2) of those years must be in skilled heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trades.
- Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade area may substitute two (2) years of general experience.
- Specific substitution options from UConn and other state agencies as indicated.
- Experience with HVACR preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Experience utilizing computer software to prepare estimates and keep shop records.
- Experience driving vans and trucks.
- Required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications, including a State of Connecticut heating, piping and/or cooling license.
- May be required by the appointing authority to acquire and retain other licenses, permits or certifications.
- Ability to lift moderate to heavy weights and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
- May be required to undergo hazardous materials training programs (e.g., asbestos, PCB, PFAS) consistent with EPA guidelines.
- May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and use protective equipment; may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather and/or environmental conditions.
- Completion of hazardous materials training may be required.
