Purpose
A licensed registered nurse (RN) is a certified school personnel assigned to the health office or to a particular student requiring respiratory support.
Enhance the educational potential of all students by promoting wellness and facilitating the management of health conditions which may create barriers to learning.
Leads assigned schools Health Services team to provide support for positive student academic and health outcomes. Members of the team may include a licensed practical nurse (LPN), a Health Technician(s), a Health Aide (HA) and UAP's (unlicensed assistive personnel - specialized instructional support personnel who provide services to students to meet increasing numbers and acuities of healthcare needs).
Performance Responsibilities
All work is performed according to the Nursing Practice Act. Routine work is carried out independently.
A RN must maintain and keep current; their license and CPR certification and is responsible for their own continuing education and professional development.
A RN may be assigned to more than one school so travel between schools is necessary.
A RN is expected to attend paid in-services and training sessions.
Reports to Regional Lead on student specific practices, Health Services Supervisor on matters concerning school nursing practice, protocol, process and nursing program, and the school principal on individual school matters. Essential Duties
Work and serve in a broad range of capacities including, but not limited to, delegation, management, teaching, and case management. Exercise competency in judgment, decision making, implementation of nursing interventions, evaluate responses to interventions, delegation of functions or responsibilities, and administration of medications and treatments prescribed by legally authorized persons.
Tasks include:
- Performing safe and effective hands-on nursing care.
- Administer medications and treatments to students per physician order and parent authorization.
- Development of new care plans (IHP/EAP) and modification of individualized plans of care (IHP/EAP) with specific goals, objectives, and interventions based on student health needs.
- Contribute to the assessment of health status by collecting, reporting, and recording objective and subjective data.
- Interfacing with health care providers in the community regarding initiating and updating individualized plans of care, medications, and treatments in the school setting.
- Delegating according to the Delegation Decision Making Model provided by the Board of Nursing to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP), Health Aides (HA), Health Technicians (HT) or licensed practical nurses (LPN).
- Supervise Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP), Health Aides (HA), Health Technicians (HT) or licensed practical nurses (LPN) in delegated and assigned health care. In the educational environment, due to the stability of the student's clinical state and predictability of medical outcomes, the degree of required direction and supervision provided to the licensed practical nurse (LPN) by the licensed registered nurse (RN) is taken into consideration.
- Care for and monitor students with health-related conditions or who may be ill/injured, administer basic first aid, and assist with emergencies.
- Communicate with parents/guardian regarding concerns and treatment by telephone, or written communication.
- Assist with student health screenings as instructed and assigned by the Health Services Department.
- Provide Medicaid billing for eligible services.
- Encourage and promote disease prevention such as hand washing and good hygiene.
- Monitor immunization status and provide resources for immunizations.
- Screen for contagious diseases and provide referral and treatment information.
- Work through Health Service Supervisor and with local health officials to track reportable communicable diseases.
- Assist students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
- Participate multidisciplinary MTSS (multi-tiered system of support) teams: assist team in the identification of students with health conditions and disabilities and interpret health factors pertinent to the student's disability.
- Participate in identifying and reporting potential health and safety hazards for students and staff.
- Provide health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.
- Act as resource and guest speaker for health education units as requested.
- Provide in-service education opportunities for school staff on health-related issues.
- Maintain the health office; ensure it is clean, organized and fully supplied. Ensure equipment is in good working order.
- Perform data entry, maintain health records, and document all health services provided within professional, legal boundaries and school guidelines.
