PURPOSE
To enhance the educational potential of all students by promoting wellness and facilitating the management of health conditions which create barriers to learning.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The overall responsibility of the school nurse has several components: implementing an individual plan of care for students with chronic health conditions, disabilities and those who require treatments or medications, and promoting and maintaining health and well-being of students, families, and school personnel through assessment and teaching. In addition, the school nurse will develop and maintain a system of first aid, recommend school safety measures, and promote a healthful school environment, including communicable disease prevention through identification and screening and the monitoring of immunizations.
The school nurse is responsible for collecting data and maintaining health records within professional and legal boundaries and school guidelines, and contributes to school district procedures and philosophy related to the Nursing Services Program. This position assumes responsibility for their continuing education and own professional development, and reports to the Coordinator of Nursing Services on matters concerning school nursing practice and nursing program, and the school principal on individual school matters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Develop individualized health plans (IHP) with specific goals, objectives, and interventions based on student health needs.
  • Develop health action plans and protocols for care of students with health needs.
  • Administer medications and treatments to students per physician order and parent authorization.
  • Provide training on specific or individual student health needs to teachers and other staff.
  • Provide in-service education opportunities for school staff on health-related issues.
  • Supervise unlicensed assistant personnel in delegated and assigned health care.
  • Participate on the child study team: assist team in the identification of students with health conditions and disabilities, and interpret health factors pertinent to the student's disability.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the health component of the individual educational plan (IEP).
  • Participate in developing and maintaining a system for providing first aid and emergency care.
  • Participate in identifying and reporting potential health and safety hazards for students and staff.
  • Monitor immunization status and provide resources for immunizations.
  • Screen for contagious diseases and provide referral and treatment information.
  • Work with local health officials to track reportable communicable diseases.
  • Identify student health needs through health assessments.
  • Assist students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
  • Provide health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.
  • Act as resource and guest speaker for health education units as requested.
  • Maintain daily and yearly information regarding utilization of school health service programs and health status of students.
  • Initiate, maintain, and annually review student health records.
  • Provide Medicaid billing for eligible services.
  • Attend district in-services and meetings as directed.
  • Participate in self evaluation of performance and continuing education activity.
COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others: contribute to the development of a positive school climate;
  • Abide by the Code of Ethics for the School Nursing Profession as established by the Idaho State Board of Education, the Board Policies and Procedures of the District and the terms and provisions of the Standard Teachers' Contract;
  • Compliance with the requirements of Idaho Code with regard to teacher and school nurse conduct, including but not limited to the manner in which suspected instances of child abuse or suspected student suicidal tendencies are addressed;
