Description:

Unit has 10 Labor and Delivery beds. There are 2 operating rooms on the unit for C-sections. Registered Nurses on the unit will circulate. Unit includes 4 triage beds. There are 10 postpartum beds available. Approximately 120 births occur per month on average. AWHONN standards for ratios are followed (primarily 1:1 in Labor and Delivery and 1:6 couple care in Postpartum).

RNs are required to titrate drips. Primarily, titrations are done for Pitocin per protocol, magnesium, and rarely insulin. Charge Nurse, Resource Nurse, and House Supervisor are available on each shift. Charge Nurse and Resource Nurse do not have assigned patients. Certified Nursing Assistants are available on the floor 4-5 days and nights a week. A unit clerk is present 24/7.

An OB hospitalist is in-house 24/7 with midwives always on call. A neonatal nurse practitioner is available 24/7. A neonatologist can be accessed within 15 minutes. Anesthesia is available through CRNAs 24/7. The unit does not have monitor technicians. The electronic fetal monitoring system used is GE Connect. Shifts are 12 hours from 7 PM to 7 AM. Staff cannot work more than five shifts in a row per policy.

The unit accommodates scheduling requests outside of approved time off as much as possible. Weekend and holiday requirements are based on unit needs. There is no call or standby requirement. RNs are required to float to similar units within the valley. Notice will be given prior to shifts for potential floating opportunities. True floating to a separate location is rare.

Scrub color is blue, with scrubs provided on the unit. Unit-specific orientation typical consists of 4-6 shifts. The charting system in use is EPIC. BSN is not required. Trauma level is acute.
