A Brief Summary of This Position

The purpose of the Inspector role is to oversee the inspection process in the tubing department, ensuring that all products meet Valmont’s and customer specifications. This includes checking for defects in welds, steel, and dimensions, as well as ensuring proper treatment for rust prevention. By monitoring the production process, the Inspector helps prevent defects and ensures that all requirements are met, resulting in high‑quality tubing with minimal rework or corrections.

The role also involves recording essential data, adjusting equipment to meet specifications, and completing necessary quality assurance documentation, all while focusing on customer satisfaction and delivering a seamless operation.

Essential Functions
  • Make equipment adjustments, including the Turkshead and pull‑through sections, to ensure tubes are round, straight, and dimensionally acceptable.
  • Work closely with end prep and bundler teams to ensure correct tube specifications and proper setup.
  • Manage changeovers and ensure the correct parts are used for each job.
  • Prepare production cards, collect heat numbers and order numbers, and coordinate with Met Lab to ensure samples and paperwork are accurate and submitted on time.
  • Operate tools and equipment such as micrometers, plug gauges, ring gauges, cranes, forklifts, PI tapes, and spacers.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management to ensure quality standards and timelines are met.
  • Inspect products in the tubing department to identify flaws in the weld area, steel, and finished tube.
  • Verify that tubes meet quality standards for straightness, length, ovality, wall thickness, internal diameter, flash control, and surface quality.
  • Perform destructive tests such as flare and flattening.
  • Ensure proper rust preventatives are applied to finished products as required.
  • Record C.I.R. information and secure samples for analysis when needed.
  • Stencil tubing with required information, including size, gauge, length, customer order number, material heat number, coil tag number, and coil vendor name.
  • Ensure accurate counts of finished tube and maintain proper documentation, including inspection sheets, production cards, and Met Lab reports.
  • Complete Q.A. median charts for all tubing produced and enter SPC data as required.
  • Work efficiently under pressure to minimize downtime and maintain the flow of production.
  • Continuously learn and apply knowledge of material properties and equipment use to ensure high‑quality output.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • Proficient in basic mathematics, including multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction, with the ability to convert between decimals and fractions.
  • Strong knowledge of both imperial and metric measurement systems.
  • Competent in the use of measuring tools such as tape measures, micrometers, dial indicators, radius gauges, PI tapes, and other basic shop tools.
  • Must possess the ability to read and write clearly and legibly.
  • Capable of working overtime as required to meet business demands.
  • Demonstrates a strong passion for quality, integrity, and the drive to excel and produce exceptional results.
  • Highly qualified candidates will also possess ASQ Quality Inspector certification or experience in Quality Assurance.
