As a Field Service Technician, you will assist with on‑site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. The role requires direct, face‑to‑face customer interaction and proactive sales of TDS services and products, including Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and/or high‑speed networks. You will exceed customer expectations by providing exceptional service, identifying needs, and educating customers on communications solutions.
Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, the individual selected for this position must reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Meridian, Idaho warehouse at 3750 E Pewter Falls Street, Ste 110 – Meridian, .
This position can be hired at either a Field Service Technician (requisition #) or a Field Service Technician‑Network (requisition #) level depending on the skills and qualifications of the candidate. Please reference each posting for the minimum qualifications required for each role and apply accordingly.
Responsibilities- Assist with and perform on‑site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment, general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products & services for new and existing customers. Identify locations of defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable. Locate and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage.
Keep orderly logs of locate requests and perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities. - Assist with and provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections. Respond to "trouble" dispatches.
- Assist with and provide support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
- Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers.
- Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs and meet customer obligations.
Other Qualifications
- Upon hire, must successfully complete customer‑specific requirements, which may include a background check administered by the customer.
- Requires being available for on‑call/standby responsibilities and occasional travel. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
- Upon hire, must successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
- Ability to maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW >10,000 lbs.
- A+ certification and computer networking experience.
- Gain an understanding of telecommunication products and services, including Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet/Intranet, Bonding & Grounding, Data & Computers/Transmission Concepts, Fiber Optic Transmission, Static Sensitive Equipment, Color Codes, Structured Wiring, Video/CATV/DBS Installation, Inventory Systems, Cable Locating, Battery Maintenance, Key Systems/PBX, Centrex, Switch Maintenance, Voicemail, Special Circuits, Fiber Terminals, Subscriber CXR Terminals, T‑1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN Voice & Data, Testing & Certifying Loops.
- Practical knowledge/experience with computer applications:
Databases, Trouble/Repair/Dispatch Systems, Plant Record Systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS Excel. - Ability to work and make decisions independently with little or no supervision.
