Mechanical Railcar Repair Technician - 2nd Shift

Sasser is a transportation asset services and management company founded in 1928. CF Rail Services, a subsidiary, provides railcar repair and maintenance across North America.

The Mechanical Railcar Repair Technician 1 supports our CF Rail Services team, delivering high‑quality railcar repairs quickly and safely. This 2nd shift position is scheduled 3:30pm–12:00am.

• Perform repairs including mechanical, grinding, cleaning, and touch‑up painting on various railcars.
• Set up and operate hand and power tools such as air arc, plasma cutting, and huck machines, and handle oxy‑fuel heating and cutting processes.
• Operate equipment including forklift, man‑lift, crane, skid loader, hoist, or hydraulic boom.
• Document work performed on work orders and record additional repairs.
• Complete all required education and formal training courses.
• Maintain a high level of quality with an understanding of CFRS quality assurance, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
• Learn and develop a comprehensive understanding of railcar components and billing repair cards.
• Keep the work area clean and orderly in compliance with CFRS, OSHA, and environmental rules.
• Contribute to team effort, set an example, and conduct activities consistent with CFRS core values.
• Adhere to all CFRS safety procedures and learn the basic flow and logistics of the railroad industry and repair business.
• Wear appropriate PPE in all work areas.

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education and experience (1–3 months related training or experience).
• Pass the FRA Freight Car Safety Standards course with a score of 80% or higher, coordinated by CF Rail Management.
• Team player with effective listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Reading comprehension of technical and regulatory documents in English.
• Mathematical skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
• Reasoning skills: applying common sense to execute written or diagrammatic instructions and solve standardized problems.
• Physical ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, reach, climb ladders, lift up to 50lbs, and operate heavy equipment.
• Medical certificate to wear a respirator for prolonged periods.

Work assignments involve standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, crawling, crouching, lifting, and operating heavy equipment. Tasks may require working in awkward positions up to 20ft. work, handling up to 50lbs, and wearing respirators or PPE.

Work is performed outdoors and indoors in all weather conditions, with exposure to wet or humid environments, moving mechanical parts, fumes, and moderate‑to‑loud noise. Overtime or varied shifts may be required.
