Mechanic- Highway Department

Job Summary

Regular full‑time position performing highly skilled work in the Highway Shop. Responsibilities include maintenance and repair of all diesel and gasoline trucks and construction equipment of the Highway Department. Must troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and make necessary repairs. Position is supervised by the Highway Department Shop Foreman.

• Diagnose problems and perform repairs to fleet of trucks and construction and maintenance equipment, including engine overhauls, drive train repairs, electrical and hydraulic systems, major welding, and minor machine work.
• Outfit and maintain county vehicles and equipment; perform major repairs such as clutch, water pump, fuel pump, cooling, ignition, and electrical systems.
• Grease and clean equipment; check fluids; conduct vehicle safety checks; change lights, tires, hoses, oil, filters, spark plugs, wires and related parts including valves, pistons, and main bearing assemblies.
• Perform brake and radiator work, and repair and overhaul engines, transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, air compressors, hydraulic systems, and other specialized related equipment.
• Perform body work, including gas and electrical welding, painting, and metal fabrication to complete repair assignments.
• Carry out various automotive shop tasks and miscellaneous maintenance and custodial duties in and around the shops and buildings as required.
• Maintain records and submit reports as required.
• Be available for emergency and non‑emergency calls for winter snow and ice removal.
• Attend meetings, continuing education seminars, and training courses as needed.
• Adhere to and promote safety as a priority in the workplace.

Other duties may be assigned within the scope of responsibility and skill requirements for the job.

• High‑school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanic program or related field preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in heavy truck and off‑road equipment repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with automotive and small engine maintenance and repair.
• Experience with mechanical, electrical and computer‑controlled hydraulic systems and service calls.
• Commercial driver’s license with air brakes, combination, and tank endorsements.
