Senior Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Engineering Coordinator
Our client has an immediate contract‑to‑hire opportunity in their Merrillville, Indiana regional office. This role is ideal for a hands‑on engineer with strong leadership capability and experience in heavy industrial environments, particularly steel and aluminum production facilities.

Key Responsibilities- Design mechanical systems and components that meet client specifications and regulatory requirements
- Identify, analyze, and resolve complex engineering problems
- Evaluate system performance, reliability, and safety of final designs
- Modify and optimize designs to eliminate malfunctions and improve efficiency
- Ensure compliance with client standards and applicable governmental codes and regulations
- Collaborate with project managers, multidisciplinary engineering teams, and clients
- Develop engineering plans and designs using CAD software
- Prepare scopes of work, engineering reports, and technical documentation
- Develop project budgets and time estimates
- Independently manage in‑discipline projects from proposal through completion
- Lead and manage small mechanical design teams, including responsibility for hours worked and billed
- Perform quality assurance reviews of all mechanical engineering deliverables prior to client submission
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 5–8 years of mechanical engineering experience in heavy industrial environments
- Strong understanding of mechanical fundamentals including:
- Mechanics
- Kinematics
- Thermodynamics
- Materials science
- Familiarity with die cast machine layouts, processes, and operations
- Working knowledge of applicable mechanical codes and standards (ASME, AWS, NFPA)
- Experience with HVAC system calculations and equipment sizing for industrial applications
- Proficiency in AutoCAD with the ability to produce fabrication‑level detail drawings
- Ability to read, create, and interpret schematic drawings using proper symbology
- Working knowledge of welding procedures, techniques, and symbols
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and documentation skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Ability to perform engineering quality checks on drawings and technical documents
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Extensive experience with industrial process piping systems
- Ability to size piping based on flow, materials, and applicable standards
- Working knowledge of hydraulic systems including pumps, control valves, and filtration
- Experience with pipe stress analysis software (e.g., CAESAR or similar)
- Hydraulic troubleshooting experience
- Ability to interact professionally with personnel at all levels, from field staff to facility owners
- Self‑motivated, dependable, and accountable
- Clean driving record with no adverse license restrictions
- Ability to walk throughout industrial facilities for inspections and meetings
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs unassisted
- Willingness to travel overnight as needed
