Position Summary

The School Nurse is responsible for delivering comprehensive school health services to students and staff in accordance with district policies and state regulations. The School Nurse supports student academic success by promoting health and safety, preventing illness, managing chronic conditions, and responding to medical emergencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.

Clinical Services
  • Provide assessment, triage, and treatment of student and staff illnesses and injuries.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with chronic or complex medical conditions.
  • Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications in compliance with state law and district policy.
  • Perform health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing, BMI) as required.
  • Maintain and update student immunization records and ensure compliance with state requirements.
Emergency Preparedness & Response
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid, CPR, and AED intervention as needed.
  • Develop and maintain emergency action plans for students with life-threatening conditions.
  • Collaborate with emergency medical services when appropriate.
Health Promotion & Education
  • Promote communicable disease prevention and infection control measures.
  • Provide health education and resources to students, families, and staff.
  • Serve as a health resource for school personnel.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns.
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, counselors, and support staff to promote student well-being.
  • Coordinate with healthcare providers and community agencies as needed.
Compliance & Documentation
  • Maintain accurate, confidential health records in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA, and district policies.
  • Prepare required reports for district and state agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local health regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Indiana.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional nursing experience; pediatric, public health, or community health experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child growth and development, communicable diseases, and emergency care procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record systems and basic computer applications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners.
Physical Demands
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Work Environment
  • School-based setting with daily interaction with students and staff.
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
