Highway Maintenance Project Engineer – Bureau of Highway Maintenance – State of New Hampshire Department of Transportation, 7 Hazen Drive, Concord, NH – $34.14 per hour – $46.63 per hour – Position #21282
ResponsibilitiesSupervises, plans, coordinates, and directs the design and construction of multiple complex transportation projects within Highway Maintenance to ensure compliance with Department goals and requirements. Prepares cost estimates for statewide infrastructure improvement projects. Reviews and modifies plans and specifications in response to field conditions. Authorizes the use of materials, equipment, and procedures necessary for project completion. Conducts on‑site investigations, evaluates alternatives, and recommends actions to public officials, department administrators, and consultants to resolve issues related to Bureau assets.
Supervises inspections of completed projects to verify compliance with agency policies and specifications. Communicates with the public, contractors, and news media to maintain good public relations. Represents the department at public meetings and provides technical expertise to coordinate with state departments, engineering firms, and the public. Performs administrative and engineering duties to analyze Highway Maintenance operations and guide future actions.
Directs and supervises database development for statewide systems such as permits, MATS, salt and sand inventory, and Sponsor‑a‑Highway. Provides maintenance expertise during project development, reviews plans and contract proposals, and consults with specialists to develop efficient construction methods. Coordinates with NH DOS Homeland Security and Emergency Management and other DOT bureaus regarding damage assessments and reimbursement for FEMA, FHWA, and U.S. Forest Service Roads after storm events.
Directs, supervises, and evaluates the Well Technician and manages the Well Replacement program. Prepares and critiques proposed policies, procedures, state regulations, and legislation for engineering functions and projects. Performs work in full conformance with all risk management, safety, and environmental standards, regulations, and administrative orders.
- Education:
- Master’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution; or
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering and Master of Business Administration degree from an accredited institution; or
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering; or
- Associate’s degree in engineering or engineering technology.
- Experience:
- One year of engineering practice after Professional Engineer licensure; or
- Three years of engineering practice after licensure; or
- Five years of engineering practice after licensure.
- Licensed Professional Engineer – license in Civil, Civil Highway, Geo Technical, or Structural Engineering.
- Valid driver’s license or access to transportation.
The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards established by the hiring agency.
Preferred QualificationsIn‑depth knowledge of construction techniques and practices.
After‑Hire RequirementsLicensed Professional Engineer in the State of New Hampshire within one year of employment.
