Manufacturing Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
Overview
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re developing reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin’s mission. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.
We are a team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin’s vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.
This role involves developing, qualifying, and supporting the production of advanced welding processes for flight hardware in accordance with Blue Origin’s aerospace specifications. You will work hands-on with engineers and technicians in the manufacturing area to build our launch vehicles and spacecraft. We seek people who are passionate about space and possess a strong desire to deliver results, and continuously learn and improve.
Passion for our mission and vision is required.
- Develop, test, and qualify manual, mechanized, and automated welding schedules across processes including GTAW, VPPA, resistance seam, longitudinal seam, laser, and orbital tube welding.
- Independently plan, manage, and execute process qualifications and verification campaigns with minimal guidance.
- Author, set up, and execute Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ) in accordance with AWS D17.1, AWS D17.2, and other applicable aerospace standards.
- Review NDT results from processed hardware and disposition non-conformances.
- Collaborate with manufacturing engineers, tooling engineers, and skilled trades to develop tooling and welding procedures for flight hardware.
- Operate development and production equipment as needed.
- Specify, execute, and interpret mechanical and metallurgical weld tests.
- Provide day-to-day manufacturing support for welding work areas including shop travelers, production schedules, welder qualification, and material traceability documentation.
- Manage projects and relationships with external test labs, material suppliers, equipment suppliers, and other business organizations.
- Apply general shop skills including FOD prevention, material handling, safety, calibration requirements, ESD, and contamination control of precision clean systems.
- Travel as needed to support design interface meetings, equipment support, or development activities.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area in alignment with 5S standards.
- B.S. degree or higher in materials engineering, welding engineering, or a relevant engineering field.
- Experience in one or more common aerospace welding processes: GTAW, VPPA, resistance seam, longitudinal seam, laser, or orbital tube welding.
- Deep technical understanding of aerospace fusion and solid-state welding processes for stainless steel, nickel, titanium, and aluminum alloys.
- Proven capability to set up, run, and maintain WPS and PQR records in accordance with AWS D17.1, D17.2, or similar aerospace/flight-grade welding standards.
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Self-motivated and proactive, with a demonstrated ability to drive projects and process qualifications to completion with little guidance.
- Fundamental understanding of metallurgy and/or arc physics.
- Approachable disposition, broad-minded, and adaptable to rapidly changing requirements.
- Calm demeanor in high-pressure situations with the tenacity to resolve conflict for permanent problem resolution.
- Master’s degree in materials or welding engineering.
- Experience in designing tooling and fixturing.
- Experience interpreting weld NDT results (radiographic, penetrant, etc.).
