Overview

As a Water Quality Scientist in the UK, you play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and quality of water supplies—from tap water to rivers and coastal areas. Your work involves conducting scientific analysis of water samples to monitor pollutants, pathogens and other contaminants in laboratory and field settings, interpreting data, preparing reports, and advising on treatment processes, regulatory compliance and environmental protection.

Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory analyses of water samples using analytical techniques and equipment to test for chemical, biological and physical parameters.
  • Collect field samples from various sources and assess potential risks.
  • Interpret analytical data and prepare technical reports.
  • Advise on treatment processes, regulatory compliance and environmental protection measures.
  • Develop and implement water quality management plans.
  • Investigate pollution incidents and contribute to research projects aimed at improving water treatment technologies and ecological understanding.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc Hons) in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Marine Biology or a related scientific discipline, with modules on analytical chemistry, microbiology, ecology and environmental legislation.
  • Good A‑Level grades in science subjects, particularly Chemistry and Biology.
  • Practical laboratory experience in chemical analysis, microbial culturing and environmental sampling.
  • Fieldwork experience such as river surveys or water sampling exercises.
  • Strong data‑analysis skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel and preferably statistical packages such as R or SPSS.
  • Knowledge of UK water legislation, including the Water Framework Directive, Environmental Permitting Regulations and standards set by the Drinking Water Inspectorate.
  • Effective communication skills for report writing and stakeholder engagement.
Average Salary Range

Starting salaries for Water Quality Scientists in the UK typically range from £20,000 to £28,000 per year. Experienced professionals can earn between £30,000 and £45,000, with senior roles potentially exceeding £50,000.

Typical Working Hours

Most Water Quality Scientists work standard full‑time hours, typically 37–40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Some roles that involve fieldwork or emergency response may require occasional unsocial hours or on‑call duties.
