Employment Type: Part-time (21.25 hours per week)

Base Hourly: $28.85

Class/Calendar: C41, 9.25 months

Performance Pay: Available annually

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified similar experience within ten years beyond the requirement, up to a ten‑year maximum

Job Summary: To provide interpreting and transliterating services for hearing impaired students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide interpreting and transliterating services for assigned hearing impaired students.
  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative instructions, regulations, Board policy and state regulations.
  • Assist in evaluation, in conjunction with the student’s case manager, for the appropriate method of interpreting in mainstream classes.
  • Assist in normal classroom routines and procedures by clarifying concepts, reviewing lessons assigned and actively guiding students in completing required work.
  • Coordinate tutoring or follow-up sessions with students for additional instruction.
  • Serve as a liaison between the student’s case manager and regular classroom teachers regarding student activities.
  • Interpret for hearing impaired individuals involved in the Mesa Public Schools Program (e.g., teachers, aides, parents).
  • Refer questions concerning hearing impaired students by regular education personnel to the appropriate case manager.
  • Interpret at special activities (e.g., captioned films, assemblies).
  • Continue professional growth as an educational interpreter.
  • Perform other related duties to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Regular and on‑time attendance required.
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Hearing Impaired Program Regional Director.
  • Assist with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools.
Required Qualifications
  • High School education or equivalent and 60+ college credits OR ability to pass the parapro test provided by the district free of charge.
  • Valid Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card.
  • Meet Arizona Department of Education standards of EIPA 4.0‑5.0 or RID CT and/or RID CI or NAD 5 or NIC.
  • Valid certificate from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) at Level 3 or higher.
  • Working knowledge and experience with sign‑to‑voice and voice‑to‑sign interpreting proficiency in at least one sign communication system such as American Sign Language (ASL) or Oral Interpreting.
  • Working knowledge and experience of the RID Code of Ethics as implemented for educational interpreters; professional development plan.

Work Environment &

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently present in classrooms, resource rooms, assemblies, and special education settings.
  • Regular interaction with students who are deaf or hard of hearing, general education teachers, special education staff, and school administrators.
  • Might interpret during group work, one‑on‑one tutoring, field trips, and school events.
  • High level of finger, hand, and arm movement is essential for fluent and expressive sign language interpretation.
  • Strong vision (corrected if needed) to see and respond to signing from a distance.
