Job Summary:

The position of school counselor prepares all students for high school graduation and success through direct and indirect student services. The counselor leads, advocates, and collaborates to implement a preventative, proactive counseling program using the ASCA National Model (2012). The role promotes academic, career, and social-emotional growth and contributes to school-wide college and career readiness efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage a comprehensive school counseling program based on the ASCA National Model.
  • Implement and monitor student progress, providing personalized support for those not on track to graduate within four years.
  • Maintain accountability through data-informed, evidence-based counseling decisions, collaborating with administration and faculty.
  • Act as a systems change agent to build evidence-based programming for college and career readiness.
  • Spend ≥80% of documented time on direct and indirect student services, such as instruction, group activities, planning, crisis response, and consultation.
  • Spend ≤20% of documented time on program planning and support.
  • Support 504 referrals, evaluation, and accommodation processes.
  • Assist students in crisis situations and refer to district or community resources.
  • Stay current with federal laws, state statutes, district policies, and postsecondary opportunities.
  • Support Special Education team as needed.
  • Understand high school graduation requirements, college readiness strategies, and postsecondary options.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in School Guidance and Counseling.
  • Valid Arizona School Counselor Certification.
  • Adherence to ASCA standards for school counselors.
  • Classroom teaching experience or demonstrated instructional practices.
  • Prior experience as a school counselor.
  • Experience in college and career readiness work.
  • Experience with technology in counseling program development and delivery.

Physical Requirements:

  • Office setting, classrooms, auditoriums, and shared spaces.
  • Frequent interactions with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.
  • One‑on‑one or small group counseling sessions.
  • Follows school hours and calendar.
  • Emotionally demanding balancing of administrative tasks and conflict resolution.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or computer; occasional walking and standing.
  • May involve lifting light equipment (≤25 lb).
