Overview
The current vacancy is for the Building Assignment and may be filled at either the Building Plans Examiner or Senior Building Plans Examiner level. This recruitment will also be used to establish an eligible list to fill potential future vacancies or assignments.

Building Plans ExaminerA Building Plans Examiner performs technical review of residential or other construction documents to ensure compliance with municipal building or zoning codes. The role includes reviewing construction documents for completeness, accuracy, and conformance to applicable building codes, ordinances, zoning regulations, and national standards. The employee gradually gains experience and knowledge necessary to check the complete range of construction documents. Work is performed under general direction of the Department Director or designee.
Employees may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Senior Building Plans Examiner upon meeting specific criteria-based promotion requirements.
A Senior Building Plans Examiner is responsible for performing technical review of construction documents to ensure compliance with building or zoning codes. The incumbent conducts plans examination for completeness, accuracy, and conformance to applicable building or zoning codes, ordinances, and national standards. The role includes researching historical background information, maintaining knowledge of current building or zoning policies, procedures, and standards, and handling the full range of construction document check duties including screening and preliminary review.
The position operates under general direction of the Deputy Director or designee. Senior position may receive assignments of larger and more complicated projects. Employees may progress to this class by noncompetitive promotion upon meeting criteria-based requirements.
The position provides customer service, assists and guides small business owners with development processes needed to open or expand a small business. The incumbent researches technical requirements, coordinates problem solving across multiple departments, and presents oral and written reports to City Council, other agencies, and the public. The role requires the ability to explain and interpret information, work independently, and exercise appropriate judgment.

Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or GED.
- 1-3 years of building inspection or plans review experience.
- Certification as a Building Plans Examiner or Building Inspector from an accredited organization such as ICC.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or GED.
- 3-5 years of building inspection or plans review experience for building or zoning codes.
- Certification as a Building Plans Examiner or Building Inspector from an accredited organization such as ICC.
- Certification from International Code Council (ICC) or a major model code organization.
- Supplemental coursework in construction technology and blueprint reading.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Construction Technology.
- Experience with outreach activities for small business development, including events, training, presentations related to business management and financial management.
- Public speaking experience on business management topics.
- Experience in municipal inspection, plan review, and planning.
- American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certificate and membership in relevant associations.
