Firefighter Academy- Information Background Screening

About the Role

Firefighter Recruit is a trainee class that prepares incumbents for performing public safety work. The training covers fire suppression, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), emergency and non‑emergency incident response, fire code enforcement, public education, and station/equipment maintenance. Recruits learn to ventilate burning buildings, use ladders, advance hose lines, make hydrant connections, direct water streams, perform search and rescue, and operate personal protective equipment and self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) in extreme conditions.

• Demonstrate fire suppression and EMS skills in accordance with MFMD standards.
• Assist in fire code enforcement and public safety education.
• Maintain station and equipment in readiness for duty.
• Follow the close supervision of a Fire Captain and adhere to standard operating procedures.
• Perform related duties as required by the department.

• At least 18 years old by Monday, February 2, 2026.
• High school graduation or GED by Monday, February 2, 2026.
• Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) with a licensed agency; CPAT must be dated between August 2, 2025 and the date of application. Provide agency, CPAT number, and date in supplemental questions.
• Valid Arizona Class D driver’s license by hire or promotion date with an acceptable driving record.
• Pass a pre‑employment physical and meet or exceed National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Mesa Fire and Medical Department physical standards.
• Meet medical standards for wearing a tight‑fitting respirator (CFR ) by hire date and maintain certification.
• Pass a psychological examination as required by policy.
• Not listed on the Office of Inspector General (OIG) List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
• State of Arizona EMT or Paramedic certification is not required for application but must be obtained before the academy start date if not already certified.

Must possess a valid Arizona Class D Driver’s License by hire or promotion date and a clean driving record.

Must pass a pre‑employment physical, meet NFPA and MFMD physical standards, and maintain certification for respirator use.

Must complete a psychological examination.

Must not be on the OIG LEIE list.

Eligible candidates must undergo pre‑employment or pre‑placement alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy.

• Successful completion of Fire Science coursework from a regionally accredited college or university.
• Prior firefighting experience (full‑time, part‑time, or volunteer).
• Bilingual proficiency in Spanish.

Firefighter Pre‑Recruit: $34,958 Annually

Firefighter Recruit: $57,593 Annually

Mesa Firefighter (after promotion from Recruit Academy): $60,562 Annually
