Banner Desert Medical Center is seeking a new Health Unit Coordinator. This entry level position is responsible for a variety of administrative support functions and customer service for an assigned patient care area, promoting an organized, efficient delivery of care to patients. The position facilitates communication between physicians, nurses and patients, calls in consults and acts as a liaison with all other internal departments and external contacts.
This is a full‑time day shift position (6 AM – 2:30 PM) that includes rotating weekends and holidays. Employees use a self‑scheduling tool and receive a flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential as well as an 18% night shift differential.

Position SummaryThe Health Unit Coordinator performs duties that support patient care and communication across the department.
Responsibilities include:
- Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support overall operating efficiency and effective flow of communication and information.
- Processes patient admissions, records bed assignments in-system, makes face sheets, prints patient labels, and orders outside records and physician office records.
- Maintains a complete patient record with admission, transfer, and discharge information, progress notes, consent forms, and all required reports and chart forms.
- Enters pending discharges into the system, coordinates patient appointments for procedures and treatments required prior to timely discharge, and processes patient discharges.
- Maintains adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies, completes requisition forms and reconciles orders upon delivery.
- Monitors and tracks the use of electronic equipment such as patient and laptops, ensuring all are accounted for and in working order.
- Works under local supervision with responsibility for the assigned unit only; interacts with other unit secretaries and staff across the facility and with external customers.
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent.
- 1 year of medical clerical experience, preferably in a hospital or physician office, or prior experience in customer service.
- Excellent organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy along with commonly used office software and keyboarding skills.
- Employees in certain clinical settings must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card and an Arizona Criminal History Affidavit at time of hire.
- Completion of an approved unit secretary program.
- BLS certification.
- Additional related education or experience.
