Position: Benefits and Payroll Manager

We are seeking an experienced Benefits & Payroll Manager to oversee payroll operations and manage the day-to‑day administration of employee benefits for our growing nonprofit behavioral health organization serving approximately 900 employees across Arizona.

This role is ideal for a hands‑on leader who thrives in a compliance‑driven environment, values accuracy, and is passionate about supporting employees through exceptional payroll and total rewards service. Reporting to the Director of Talent & Total Rewards, this position is a working manager role that both leads and supports payroll operations. You will supervise payroll staff, assist with payroll processing and compliance activities, and directly manage the daily administration of employee benefits programs.

What

You’ll Do Payroll Leadership & Oversight
  • Supervise and coach payroll staff, ensuring accountability and performance excellence.
  • Serve as operational back‑up for payroll processing.
  • Review payroll runs for accuracy and compliance.
  • Oversee payroll audits, tax filings, and year‑end processing (W‑2s)
  • Maintain strong internal controls and payroll documentation.
Benefits Administration
  • Manage day‑to‑day administration of medical, dental, vision, retirement and ancillary benefits.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for benefits vendors and brokers.
  • Coordinate annual open enrollment and employee communications.
  • Ensure compliance with ERISA, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA and applicable state laws.
  • Resolve complex employee benefits inquiries in partnership with HR.
Employee Education & Collaboration
  • Participate in new hire orientation, educating employees on payroll and benefits.
  • Partner with Finance, IT, Risk Management and leadership to ensure operational excellence.
What You Bring
  • 5–7+ years of combined payroll and benefits experience
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll laws, benefits administration and leave compliance.
  • Experience with HRIS/payroll systems (Dayforce or similar preferred)
  • High attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion.
  • Experience in healthcare, nonprofit or highly regulated environments preferred.

Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business, Finance, Accounting or related field preferred (equivalent experience considered).

Compensation

Salary range: $90,000 – $95,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
