Position Summary
This Spanish Medical Interpreter will provide English/Spanish interpretation services for patients, companions, and families with limited English proficiency throughout the hospital, from registration to discharge. The role acts as a neutral conduit of information between healthcare providers and patients/families, ensuring effective communication, documenting services, and serving as a cultural mediator when appropriate.
Responsibilities- Act as a conduit of information for all clinical services, including medical terminology and support services, policies and procedures to LEP patients.
- Interpret patient and/or family questions or concerns to appropriate healthcare staff to optimize the patient care experience.
- Document accurately, completely, and clearly all interpretation services.
- Serve as a cultural mediator when appropriate to enhance communication between patients/families and healthcare staff.
- Maintain neutrality as a conduit of information, conferring with supervisor on unusual situations.
- Associate’s degree in communications, health care related field, or equivalent experience.
- Fluency in English and Spanish with at least 1 year of interpreter experience.
- Understanding of medical terminology.
- Effective written and oral communication, problem‑solving, human‑relations, organizational, and time‑management skills.
- Flexibility to respond to multiple demands.
- Effective 9/1/2019, new hires or transfers must pass a written and oral exam with a score of 75% or above.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications or health care related field.
- Completion of a medical interpreter skills training course, including learning the code of ethics and standards of practice.
- Additional related education and/or experience.
