Job Summary

The Barn Manure Laborer is responsible for the proper removal, management, and handling of manure within the barn facilities. This role ensures that manure removal equipment remains in good working order, contributes to the control of fly populations, and helps maintain high standards for the quality of the product delivered to customers.

Responsibilities
  • Wear safety equipment, including gloves and protective footwear, at all times.
  • Shower daily in and out of the facility to maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness due to the nature of the work environment.
  • Ensure curtains are closed when manure is being run and opened when it is not.
  • Operate manure belts a minimum of three times per week, ensuring proper rotation and functionality.
  • Move the diverter to the opposite wind row (plow belt) each time manure is run.
  • Run all manure belts for a full revolution, with additional run time as necessary based on the condition of the manure.
  • Follow the established sequence for running manure belts: one floor at a time until the entire lay house is complete.
  • Stay alert while manure belts are running to monitor for any operational issues.
  • Ensure proper tracking of manure belts and smooth operation of scrapers, crossover belts, incline belts, and plow belts.
  • Troubleshoot any issues with manure handling equipment promptly to maintain smooth operation.
  • After completing the running of all belts, reset all belt scrapers to their relaxed positions and clean off any debris.
  • Sweep the rear of the lay house to remove any remaining manure debris.
  • Move excess manure deposited outside the dry barns or on concrete slabs to the appropriate manure piles using the correct equipment and methods.
  • Remove all debris (e.g., cage parts, gloves, shoe covers, tools, mortality, live birds) before transitioning to the next barn for manure removal.
Qualifications
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot manure removal equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to stay alert during equipment operation.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy materials, including manure.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding and sometimes unsanitary environment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow procedures.
Education and Experience
  • Experience in manure management, agricultural operations, poultry or livestock facilities, or farm labor is preferred.
  • Knowledge of operating and troubleshooting mechanical equipment, such as manure belts or similar systems, is preferred.
  • Completion of basic safety training in agricultural or industrial work environments is highly desirable.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and working in physically demanding environments.
  • Comfortable working in a barn facility with exposure to animals, manure, and other agricultural materials.
  • Capability to perform tasks in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Willingness to adhere to strict hygiene and safety protocols, including wearing protective gear and showering in and out of the facility.
